TALK #2 (level 1) – SQL Server Master Data Services
John Kirby takes a look at MDS in SQL Server and how it provides a robust solution for manual reference/seed master data, rather than error-prone shared network files.
If you don't know about MDS, and/or are frustrated with unreliable source files in your ETL process, this talk is for you.
MDS is a component of SQL Server 2008R2 to 2019 Developer, Enterprise and BI editions (64 bit only). It plugs in to Excel to provide data stewards a familiar, easy way to provide manual master data to the data warehouse. The data is validated and stored in a central database which your ETL can pull from.
It hasn't changed a lot along the SQL lifespan. The differences will be mentioned in the talk.
John is the organiser of the Subject Data: Bristol meetup (formerly Data Bristol). He is a Microsoft Data consultant with 8 years experience, mainly in finance, following 6 years as a web systems engineer.
